I’m sure we can all agree that it has been a whirlwind year for the retail industry. We’ve seen industry veterans battle for the lead spot in innovation and consumer loyalty. We also saw retailers known for their presence in the online world make a foray into brick and mortar, not to mention the sales records that mobile shopping has set thus far. The list goes on and on. It has been a thrill to see all the changes happening within our industry, and we expect to see much more of that in 2018.
Speaking of change, I am proud to say that Ecrebo certainly has had its fair share of exciting news over the past year. As we close in on the final weeks of 2017 and start to look ahead to 2018, I wanted to take a moment to look back at the many significant events and achievements that our company has experienced over the past 12 months. After all, as the saying goes, “The only time you should ever look back is to see how far you’ve come.”
An investment into the future
Ecrebo was proud to receive a £12m investment from Air Miles and Nectar founder Sir Keith Mills and former Warburg Pincus Head of Europe, Joseph Schull at the start of 2017. The investment has given us a significant boost in terms of supporting our product and technology development and accelerating our expansion into North America. We grew our senior leadership team with the appointments of Hannah Lowry as CFO and Michael Poyser as Chief Analytics Officer, after I joined as CEO in March. We were also delighted to welcome Mike Grimes as our new President of North America to lead our endeavours on that side of the Atlantic. We finish the year with 63 employees, having almost doubled the size of our team during 2017, setting us up for growth during 2018 and beyond.
We were thrilled to announce long-term strategic partnerships with both Waitrose and Dixons Carphone. Waitrose, one of the UKs leading grocery retailers, signed a five-year contract extension to deliver targeted customer engagement through our ‘Message at Till’ solution across their 350-store estate. In addition, Dixons Carphone – Europe’s leading specialist electrical and telecommunications retailer and services company – signed a five-year contract with Ecrebo. The partnership will allow Dixons to upgrade the capabilities of its point of sale coupon programme by also implementing our 'Message at Till’ solution across all 450 of its megastores.
In 2017, Ecrebo was recognised by our industry peers on several occasions. Most recently, we were awarded the Retail Partnership of the Year (in store) Award with Waitrose, at this year’s Retail Systems Awards. We also won the Growth Business of the Year at the National Technology Awards and made an appearance on the FT1000 annual list of Europe’s fastest-growing companies. We were also shortlisted for two prestigious Retail Week Tech. Awards - Tech Supplier of the Year award and the Digital Transformation Pioneer award - in conjunction with our customer, PANDORA UK.
As CEO of Ecrebo, it is my duty to oversee our global presence, international growth strategy and technology offering. It is also my responsibility to ensure that we set, meet and exceed our goals in the highly-competitive retail environment. This past year has certainly exceeded my expectations, but we have no plans of slowing down. Stay tuned, as we will be making some exciting announcements about our industry-leading point of sale marketing platform over the coming months.
It’s an exciting time to be in retail, no doubt, and I am confident that the Ecrebo team is poised for great success in 2018 and beyond.
