Glossary

Retail promotional technology comes with its own vocabulary — from point-of-sale mechanics to campaign measurement. This glossary defines the terms used across Ecrebo’s platform and the wider retail engagement industry, so retail marketing, IT, and analytics teams can navigate vendor conversations and internal strategy discussions with a shared frame of reference.

A/B Testing A method of comparing two versions of a promotion or offer by showing each to a different segment of customers and measuring which performs better against a defined metric, such as redemption rate or basket size.

API Connectivity The ability of a retail platform to connect to a retailer’s existing systems, such as POS, ecommerce, or CRM software, through a programmatic interface rather than requiring new infrastructure or hardware. See Ecrebo’s Promo Query API.

Basket Data The full set of items, prices, and discounts within a single customer transaction. Basket data is the input a promo engine evaluates in real time to decide which offer, if any, applies to that purchase.

BPA (Bisphenol A) A chemical historically used in thermal receipt paper that has raised health and environmental concerns. Switching to digital receipts removes BPA exposure associated with handling printed thermal paper.

Campaign Intelligence The practice of connecting completed sales back to the specific promotion, channel, and customer segment that produced them, so retailers can measure a campaign’s real incremental effect rather than relying on total revenue trends alone. See Retail Data Analytics & Campaign Intelligence.

Coupon at Till A point-of-sale technology that generates a personalized offer at the moment a transaction is completed, rather than requiring a customer to seek out or activate a discount beforehand. See Coupon at Till.

CRM (Customer Relationship Management) Software retailers use to store and manage customer data, purchase history, and segmentation rules. Promotional platforms like Ecrebo typically connect to a retailer’s existing CRM rather than replacing it.

Cross-Channel Consistency Ensuring a customer receives the same offers, pricing, and recognition whether they shop online, in-store, or on mobile, so a promotion seen in one channel isn’t contradicted in another.

Digital Receipt An electronic version of a transaction receipt, delivered by email, SMS, or mobile app, that can carry personalized marketing content alongside standard transaction details. See Digital Receipt.

Dynamic Pricing Adjusting the price or discount level of a product or offer in real time based on factors such as demand, inventory, customer segment, or time of day.

Ecommerce Connectivity Integration between a retailer’s online store and its in-store POS systems, so customer data, promotions, and analytics stay unified regardless of which channel a purchase happens in. See Ecommerce & Online Retail Marketing.

First-Party Data Data a retailer collects directly from its own customers and transactions, as opposed to data purchased or licensed from a third party. First-party transaction data is the foundation of real-time promotional targeting.

Loyalty Program A structured system of rewards, points, or tiered benefits designed to encourage repeat purchases. Promotional and receipt technology can extend a loyalty program by delivering points updates, tier status, or targeted rewards at the point of sale.

Omnichannel A retail strategy in which all channels, online, in-store, and mobile, function as a single connected experience rather than separate, disconnected systems.

POS (Point of Sale) The hardware and software used to process a customer transaction at checkout. Real-time promotional and receipt technology typically integrates with a retailer’s existing POS rather than replacing it.

Real-Time Personalization Delivering a promotional offer, message, or recommendation to a specific customer within the same transaction in which their basket data was captured, typically within milliseconds of purchase.

Redemption Rate The percentage of issued offers or coupons that customers actually use. Coupon-at-till and digital receipt offers typically show higher redemption rates than traditional mailed or app-based coupons because the offer arrives with no extra step required to access it.

Segmentation Dividing a retailer’s customer base into groups based on shared characteristics, such as purchase history, loyalty tier, or spending pattern, so promotions can be targeted more precisely than a single blanket offer to all customers.

Thermal Paper The heat-sensitive paper commonly used to print retail receipts. Thermal paper has historically been manufactured using BPA or similar chemical developers, which is part of why some retailers are shifting toward digital receipts.

Uplift Measurement A statistical method for isolating the incremental sales a specific promotion or campaign generated, separating that effect from unrelated factors like seasonality or general demand trends.
